Quad 66 ST Input Module Upgrade. This upgrade can be made to both the Moving Magnet and Moving Coil versions of this module. The upgrade provides a far more neutral sound with reduced noise and distortion. The original modules, particularly the moving coil module, can be quite dull sounding with the top frequencies subdued. The upgrade resolves all of these issues. The load resistors and capacitor can be changed to exactly match your cartridge requirements. Each module is one channel and contains the cartridge load capacitor and resistor and pre amplifier matched to the cartridge sensitivity. A power supply for the pre amplifier and the RIAA filter amplifier. Each of these circuits is upgraded as follows: The pre amplifier is re-built using low noise transistors and low noise resistors. The load capacitor is replaced with a polystyrene type and the feedback capacitors are replaced with Nichicon Muse ES non polarised capacitors. The stage coupling capacitor is also replaced with a Nichicon Muse ES non polarised capacitor. The original pre amplifier power supply is built on one channel of a TL072 dual op amp, this is replaced with a single channel OPA134 op amp by using a Brown Dog IC adapter. The power supply capacitor is replaced with a Elna Cerafine capacitor of 220uF. The RIAA filter-amplifier is originally built on the other channel of the TL072 op amp. This is replaced by a single channel OPA211 op amp. This is a new op amp from TI and offers some the lowest noise and distortion figures of any op amp from any manufacturer. A polystyrene capacitor is used at the input to the op amp and the output resistors are replaced with low noise types. Two small de-coupling capacitors are added to the supply to the op amp to ensure stability. The module can be built to the above specification for either Moving Magnet cartridges at 3mV 47k Ohms and 220pF or Moving Coil cartridges at 400uV 100 Ohms and 220pF. Modules can also be converted either way at no extra cost. Other sensitivities and load options are available on request.
